Tradition at Team Boon

Over the many decades, indeed centuries, that cricket has been played across the globe there have been far too many many memorable moments to record, some with the bat, some with the ball, some out in the field, and some in the changing rooms (“What happens in the changing rooms, …..”, as the cliche goes!). In searching through the Valley of Peace Cricket Club’s archives we came across an extreme example of field positioning by Team Boon, showing a degree of confidence that few other field settings can portray. “Intimidating” could well be the term but the more competitive types would proffer the use of “strategic” instead.

Team Boon stand out as having what’s become a dramatic & long-held tradition in the field. In the words of Scott Cartwright, “they start (every game) with this formation until the first run is scored; the person at 9th slip, who is usually the youngest player playing for them that day, has to field the ball where ever it goes in the field. They resume their normal positions after the first run has been scored. A terrific tradition that has been going over 20 years”.

Team Boon are not the only team to have colourfully spread themselves across the greater slip cordon over the decades, with 9th slip almost closer to the boundary than to the stumps! For example:

Valley of Peace Cricket Club Family Picnic, 15th Nov 2020

It was great to see a very good turnout for this year’s Valley of Peace Cricket Club Christmas family picnic! Around 55-60 people attended and joined in the races and competitions. The water slide was a new addition this year and was very popular – as were the traditional 3-legged race, egg and spoon race and sack race.

The premier lawn bowls event was won by a very reluctant starter, Angie Banks and her bowling partner Scott Cartwright. Prizes were awarded for the best fancy dress, the best kids joke and the biggest represented family (12x Smiths).

Santa arrived on a ride-on mower and although he found the conditions difficult in the 100% synthetic suit, he provided a lolly scramble and everyone was happy. Thank you, Santa!

The busy 2018 off-season at the Valley of Peace Cricket Club

There has been a lot happening at the Valley of Peace cricket ground in the Hoon Hay Valley since the 2017/18 season finished:

  • A well has been drilled to provide the Club with a reliable water supply for irrigation. A suitable water supply was found at a depth of 60.5m. Bore diameter 150mm.

  • An underground irrigation system has been installed that will distribute water over the entire playing field.
  • 3-phase power has been brought onto the ground to power the submersible well pump.
  • The elm tree within the field of play (NW corner) started dropping limbs and has been removed for safety reasons.
  • Ground cultivation, sowing grass seed and levelling is currently work in progress.

The following people have been heavily involved with the ground restoration work: Ant Polson, Ron Dalley, Bob Masefield (and fellow Goat Herders), Gordon Fulton, Gil Sutherland, Geoff Olsen, Derek Banks, Jesse Tritschler, Bert McGrath (VoP neighbour), Tom Bryne and Terry O’Loughlin.

Photos of all the work that’s been done at the ground are on the Galleries page.

Vale John Waters

It is with much sadness to report the recent passing of The Valley of Peace Cricket Club‘s Patron, and son of the Club’s founder, John Waters.

After suffering a stroke John, unfortunately, passed away over Easter. While it is never easy to lose a loved one it is probably appropriate that John slipped away at the end of the cricket season after so many years of leadership, dedication, and service to his beloved Valley of Peace Cricket Club.

All members and visitors were recipients of John’s gentlemanly hospitality and generosity which spoke so much about his values; values we should all aspire to achieve and there is no better environment than cricket, and The Valley of Peace Cricket Club, to display them.

John’s love and dedication for the Club and ground was legendary and infectious to all members. He spent his lifetime involved in all aspects of the Club and was very proud of what his father has created and made sure that the Club would continue all its fine traditions that have always been part of The Valley of Peace.

The Club passes on its most sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers to John’s daughters, Jane and Anna.

Scott Cartwright.

Valley of Peace Annual Family Picnic Day, 26 Nov 2017

There was a really good turn-out this year for the annual Valley of Peace Xmas family picnic day at the Valley ground, with more than 30 in attendance for the picnic and fun. It was noted that the Banks family was well represented and performed with distinction again, indeed taking out the bowls competition. The kids were made to work hard for their lunch, with various running races, sack and egg/spoon races. Hopefully, they all slept well that night! It appears Santa was given a run for his money too; never a dull moment.

The Christchurch Cashmere Hills fires of Feb 2017

It is with great relief that we can confirm the Valley of Peace cricket ground has survived the Cashmere Hills fires which took hold of the Hoon Hay Valley earlier in the week. As it can be seen in the attached picture, sadly some of our closest neighbours were not so fortunate and our thoughts are with them during this stressful time.

Thanks to all of those who have been in touch regarding the ground this week, we consider ourselves very fortunate to still have our historic ground unaffected. The aerial photo below was taken at 5pm yesterday afternoon (Thurs 16th Feb). While there are still a number of dangers in the area we hope we are through the worst of it.

We are yet to know when we can access the ground again and will be in contact with those who are due to play in the next couple of weeks regarding this.

Family Christmas Picnic, 27 Nov’ 2016

A small but well-formed crowd gathered for the 2016 Valley of Peace family Christmas Picnic. The weather forecast probably kept a few away, but those who attended had a great time. Various kid’s activities took place including a treasure hunt, running race, egg & spoon race, 3-legged race, sack race and of course a lolly scramble. The lawn bowls was restricted to adults and was won fairly and squarely by teammates Lorraine Woodfield and Karen Smith. They demolished all opposition brave enough to contest them and no doubt their celebrations continued long into the night.

The Banks family was awarded this year’s prize for the most family members in attendance – including representatives from 3 generations.

The Valley of Peace Stones

The famous Valley of Peace Cricket Club Stones can now be viewed on their own page (under the History tab). Each stone represents an important part of the history of the Club and is inscribed with some famous names from around the Valley over the years, with each stone representing a landmark at the Club. The pavilion, and indeed the whole Valley ground, echoes with the voices of these past and present players, alongside all the other cricketers who have played at this beautiful cricket ground for nearly a century.

Valley of Peace Cricket Club website upgrades

This week we’ve debuted some new information in our Valley of Peace Cricket Club website upgrades which should answer a few questions.

Under the Contact page, we’ve added a “Members – Invited Players” page containing information about Club membership rules and the maintained Invited Players List. We now also have a Photo archives page that will store the older photo collections as time goes by.

Under the Fixtures page, we also have information pertaining to Match Hosting and Responsibilities, outlining responsibilities and duties required when hosting a match at the Valley home ground.

Lastly, we can now also list the Valley’s own merchandise range for members via the eCatalogue page under Links; any inquiries on items should be channelled through the two listed contacts. We’ve also added some really helpful external sites on our Links page.

More information to come.

The new deer fence at Valley of Peace Cricket Club

There has been a necessity over this off-season to install a basic electric fence around the Valley of Peace Cricket Club pitch owing to incursions from the wild deer further up the Hoon Hay Valley. Much damage has been done to the pitch recently due to hooves and droppings, so this fence has been designed to keep the invaders from the pitch itself.  You can view all the electric fence photos here …
